Calligraphy is a beautiful art form of fine handwriting. In fact, did you know that formal engraved script was designed to mimic the graceful form of calligraphy? These are some of the many wonderful ways that calligraphy can be used to enhance your wedding.

The first step is to find a good calligrapher. As most are not going to have storefronts, you are going to have to do a little more digging. A good place to start is by asking at a fine stationery store. They will often keep a list of artists on hand. Wedding shows can be another place to meet calligraphers, as can online wedding chat boards. Your best bet is to ask recently married brides who they would recommend.

Once you have narrowed it to a few calligraphers, ask to see samples of their work. Keep in mind that calligraphy is an art form, and therefore each person will have a unique style. When you are inspecting the samples, some things to look for are how precisely the letters are spaced, a consistent lettering style for the entire project, creativity and unique lettering, and of course, beautiful handwriting.  Naturally, price is a consideration, as is the turnaround time, especially for last minute details such as placecards.

There are numerous things that you can have done by a wedding calligrapher. The most common is the envelopes for the invitations. When your guests open their mailboxes to find elegantly addressed envelopes, it will make an excellent first impression. Be certain that the calligrapher is well-versed in the etiquette of proper forms of address. The bride and groom can do their part by providing her with each guest's full name and address (no nicknames or abbreviations).

For very formal weddings, it is very nice to have each invitation personalized with the name of the guest. The form is to have the invitations engraved like this: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hayward / request the honor of / Mr. and Mrs. Parker Talbot  / presence at the marriage of their daughter, and so on. The script portion would be handwritten in calligraphy. If you are fortunate enough to have an unlimited budget, the grandest invitation of all is handwritten entirely in calligraphy.

Placecards and menu cards are other pieces of stationery that are often enhanced with calligraphy. For Jewish ceremonies, the Ketubah is a very special keepsake that is worthy of fine writing. Some couples will also order special scrolls or other artwork to commemorate their nuptials. Be sure to have these beautiful pieces framed and give them a place of honor in your new home.

When you are working with a calligrapher, you will find that there is a very wide range of writing styles that can be used. You want to choose a script that fits the style of your wedding. For instance, if you are having a very formal wedding, with the bride in a ballgown and ornate wedding jewelry, you would want equally formal calligraphy, such as a flourished script. On the other hand, if you are planning to wear a 1960s inspired mod bridal gown with funky jewelry to a loft wedding, you would want to go with a style that is much more original. You can also select whimsical freestyle, traditional Celtic, or simple and clean styles of calligraphy.

Finally, think about having your calligrapher create a one-of-a-kind monogram. This type of embellishment will be a very elegant addition to your wedding stationery. Calligraphy is a wonderful way to add style and grace to your wedding
